Subfloors need sufficient time to dry and heat up in order to avoid additional costs and damage, so the floor covering must be given the necessary time. We will be happy to explain to you how you can heat up screed and save time and effort in the process.
Cement screeds (CT) and calcium sulphate screeds (CA) are mainly used in modern house construction. Their advantages include their suitability as heating screeds and their high resistance to moisture. When drying the CT variant, chemical setting takes place instead of a drying process. A certain amount of moisture is always required for complete hardening.
The floor can usually be walked on after around 24 hours. You can then allow the excess water to drain off by ventilating, so that the applied compound can be walked on. When drying cement screed, it is advisable not to speed up the process, as cracks may form due to the stresses.
Keep doors and windows closed for at least two days after the screed has been applied. Alternatively, you can also use a film to cover them. After this phase, air the room regularly.
Complete curing takes around 21 days, depending on the supplier. The laid screed can now be heated up.
Materials contract when cold and expand when warm. This basic physical principle explains why you need to heat screed. A special situation arises if there is underfloor heating underneath. Ideally – but this cannot be achieved in practice – the underfloor heating heats the screed 100 percent evenly.
However, even if uniform heating is assumed, the problem of gravel or sand of different grain sizes contained in screeds remains. The individual materials expand with different consequences. Stresses arise that lead to damage to the floor.
To avoid this situation, use a special heating program. Heat up slowly. The floor expands evenly, as the individual substances can adapt to their surroundings. This avoids tensions and balances them out.
Another advantage arises: The floor has adapted and the subsequent heating process is accelerated. This is a kind of acclimatization phase. The floor expands and prepares for the subsequent heating phases.
The minimum thicknesses for screeds are defined in DIN 18560. If the pipe diameter is 15 to 20 mm, this results in a screed thickness of around 60 to 70 mm. The following 14-day program can serve as a general guideline for heating the screed.
Start with a flow temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and maintain this temperature.
Then increase the flow temperature in 5-degree increments up to a temperature of 55 degrees Celsius. You also maintain this value.
In the last step, you gradually reduce the temperature level to 25 degrees Celsius.

While you are heating up the screed, it is advisable to ventilate well. This means: either open the window or at least tilt it. This is because sufficient moisture must be available. At the same time, excess moisture escapes. Use a residual moisture meter to check the residual moisture in the screed. Only when the values specified by the supplier have been reached can the floor covering above be laid.
Depending on the time of year, the process can speed up or slow down. In summer, the humidity is higher, which speeds up the heating process. In winter, you usually need more patience here.
Heating up the screed usually follows a similar pattern. For this reason, many manufacturers of underfloor heating systems offer special programs that include a special heating plan for drying the screed. If the heating program matches the specifications, this makes the process easier for you. You do not have to make any manual settings and errors can be avoided right from the start. If no heating is available, use mobile devices such as the HeizMax for screed drying.
House builders often want to use the existing heating system for screed drying. However, there is a risk here of losing the warranty on the appliances, as the planned heat pumps are often not designed for this continuous load and the heat pump may even become defective.
