In detached and semi-detached houses (small systems), the following applies in accordance with DVGW Code of Practice W 551 Chapter 6.2 – Small systems: “… For small systems, it is recommended to set the temperature at the drinking water storage tank to 60 °C. However, operating temperatures below 50 °C should be avoided in all cases. However, operating temperatures below 50 °C should be avoided in any case. …”. In multi-family houses, DVGW Code of Practice W 551 applies with a temperature of 60 °C in the distribution network, i.e. hot water temperature 60 °C and circulation temperature 55 °C. In large systems with a storage tank capacity of 400 liters or more or a pipe capacity of more than 3 liters, DVGW Code of Practice W 551 requires one-time heating to 60 °C within 24 hours (legionella circuit).
The legionella circuit can only be successful if it is carried out correctly and has almost no effect on systems that are already contaminated. Furthermore, system parts and pipes that do not have a flow through them are not heated and therefore not disinfected. Heating can be a preventative measure, but not a reliable protection against legionella, other bacteria and viruses.
Microorganisms are killed in a short time at temperatures above 70 °C. To do this, the water heater must be operated in such a way that water at 70 °C is still flowing in the pipes. For this to be effective, the hot water taps must be opened for at least 3 minutes. In this way, the pipe and tap are flushed, thermally disinfected and legionella killed at the same time.
Caution: Corrosion damage must be expected with galvanized steel pipes. Thermal disinfection should not be used here.
